Diamondbacks make changes to coaching staff after missing playoffs

The Arizona Diamondbacks are still recovering after missing the playoffs and they have made some changes to their coaching staff.

Diamondbacks reporter Steve Gilbert reported on Thursday that pitching coach Brent Strom, assistant pitching coach Dan Carlson and bullpen coach Mike Fetters will not return to the team in the same roles for next season.

Arizona scored 886 runs this season, the most in MLB. They went 89-73 for the campaign as a whole — which was the same record as the NL wild-card-winning New York Mets and Atlanta Braves — but Arizona did not qualify for the postseason due to a tiebreaker. But the Diamondbacks allowed 788 runs, which was the fifth-worst mark in MLB.

Arizona’s 4.62 team ERA was 27th in MLB and their 1.35 WHIP was tied for 26th.

The Diamondbacks may have been bit by some bad luck. Their walks and home run numbers weren’t bad as a staff, though they allowed the second-highest amount of hits in the league (1,468). The team’s owner also was not happy with the performance of high-priced addition Jordan Montgomery.

Put together all the factors and it’s no surprise that Arizona has made some changes. But their changes are nothing compared to those of the Marlins.
