Jets WR Mike Williams sits out practice amid trade speculation

The New York Jets seem like they may be getting rid of wide receiver Mike Williams.

Aaron Rodgers threw Williams under the bus for running the wrong route late in the Jets’ 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. Not only did Williams run the wrong route, but he also slipped and fell, which resulted in the pass being intercepted.

The next morning, the Jets had acquired Davante Adams in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The acquisition of Adams moved Williams all the way down to fourth on the team’s wide receiver depth chart. A report from NBC Sports' Mike Florio on Tuesday claimed that the Jets had officially placed Williams on the trade block. Another piece of information from Wednesday seems to confirm that.

Williams did not practice with the Jets on Wednesday.

When a team is preparing to trade a player, they sometimes will not have said player practice or play in games to avoid risking injuries. That could be what is happening with Williams. It also could be what happened with Adams, who missed the Raiders’ last three games due to a hamstring injury but will be active for the Jets on Sunday night.

Williams has 10 catches for 145 yards this season. He had typically been a big-play receiver with the Chargers, averaging 54.6 yards per game with them. It’s that type of talent Williams has displayed in the past that could entice another team to try to trade for him.
