Watch: Blues hilariously troll Utah Hockey Club for preseason own goal

The Utah Hockey Club scored its first NHL goal on Sunday — well, not exactly.

In its first preseason game of the 2024-25 season, Utah played the St. Louis Blues at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa, where the new franchise jitters were visibly apparent.

In the second period, St. Louis committed a penalty while Utah possessed the puck. With the delayed penalty, Utah pulled its goaltender and put an extra man on the ice to attempt to score 6-on-5.

That didn't work out too well as while the puck was in the offensive zone, it was passed back to the blue line where Utah's Dylan Guenther couldn't corral it. The puck then careened all the way down the ice and into Utah's empty net to put St. Louis up 2-0 in a very unconventional way.

The goal was credited to St. Louis' Anton Malmstrom as he was the last opposing player to touch the puck before it wound up in Utah's net. The team took to X to poke fun at the situation being Utah's "first goal as a franchise."

It certainly was the first time a Utah Hockey Club player put the puck into a net — just not the right one for it to count as the franchise's official first goal.

That occasion would come later in the second period when Utah's Michael Carcone tipped a pass from teammate Ben McCartney past St. Louis' goaltender, narrowing the lead to 2-1.

Utah would score two more unanswered goals into the third period before ultimately snagging its first win as a franchise 5-3 over St. Louis.

Now, it was a preseason win so it holds slightly less significance than what's to come in just a couple weeks. Utah will drop the puck in its first official regular season game as a franchise on Oct. 8 at home against the Chicago Blackhawks.
