Chaim Bloom will have a new role with the Cardinals in 2026

The St. Louis Cardinals held their end-of-season news conference Monday afternoon and announced sweeping changes that are set to take place over the next few seasons as they look to rebound as an organization.

The biggest change was the announcement that Chaim Bloom would take over for John Mozeliak as president of baseball operation after the 2025 season while also agreeing to a five-year contract with the team.

Currently an advisor to the Cardinals, Bloom is the former general manager of the Tampa Bay Rays and the former chief baseball officer with the Boston Red Sox. He will spend the upcoming season overseeing a reset of the player development system while also having the final say on who will be the new director of player development after the retirement of Gary LaRocque.

The Cardinals have failed to develop their homegrown talent over the last few years after being one of the best organizations in that area previously. With Bloom in charge, he will look to add to a promising farm system that features Baseball America's 2024 Minor League Pitcher of the Year Quinn Mathews, highly touted 2024 first-round draft pick shortstop JJ Wetherholt as well as a few others who could make their major league debuts as soon as next season.

It was also announced that manager Oliver Marmol will be back for the 2025 season after speculation he could be fired. Marmol is coming off an 83-79 season after a 71-91 finish in 2023, which was the first time the Cardinals have finished last in their division since 1990.

With the Cardinals likely to reset as an organization in 2025, a payroll cut is likely to take place which could see veterans like pitchers Sonny Gray and Ryan Helsley, third baseman Nolan Arenado and catcher Willson Contreras shopped around on the trade market this offseason.
