Say hello to Parker Meadows — the budding star demanding your attention in the MLB playoffs

A 20-something young outfielder has burst on the scene during the Major League Baseball playoffs. He is clutch at the plate, makes spectacular plays on defense and demands your attention this October.

No, Parker Meadows of the Detroit Tigers isn't as well known as Milwaukee's Jackson Chourio or San Diego's Jackson Merrill, but he's just as crucial to his team. He is already playing a significant role in the postseason.

The nearly-25-year-old Meadows played 82 regular season games for Detroit after 37 last season. It's a small sample size, but he's already proven his knack for being clutch.

In the Tigers' two-game sweep of Houston in the wild-card series, Meadows recorded a hit and a run in Game 1 and blasted a solo homer to open the scoring in Game 2.

From Aug. 3 to the end of the regular season, Meadows hit .296 with 10 doubles, five triples and six home runs. He drove in 23 runs and was a key cog in Detroit's 33-14 finish to the season during that span. The highlights have piled up along the way.

  • Aug. 7: Meadows robs Seattle's Cal Raleigh of a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Detroit goes on to win 6-2.
  • Aug. 18: Meadows lines a walk-off single to left field in the Little League Classic, helping Detroit to a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
  • Aug. 21-Sept. 1: Meadows records a 10-game hit streak, starting with a three-hit performance on Aug. 21 in a win over the Chicago Cubs. Detroit goes 8-2 during his streak.
  • Sept. 5: With his team down 3-0 in the top of the ninth against the San Diego Padres, Meadows hammers a go-ahead grand slam with two outs and two strikes. Detroit wins, 4-3.
  • Sept. 1-29: Meadows records 10 multi-hit games in the season's final month, pushing Detroit into the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Meadows and the Tigers have stolen the show, rallying to make the playoffs and dethroning the Astros in a quick two-game sweep. Next up: division rival Cleveland Guardians in the American League Division Series.

In the playoffs, game-changing players make the difference. Teams are evenly matched, and it often depends on who can deliver in the most pressure-packed moments. Meadows, though just 24, has proven he is the guy for the Tigers.

It's time for the national audience to give him its full attention.
