With Rafael Nadal's imminent retirement from professional tennis, only one of the "Big 3" remains in the game.
The "Big 3" consisted of Roger Federer, Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who won 66 of the 87 Grand Slam championships between 2003-23. Djokovic stands atop with the most Grand Slam victories (24). Nadal and Federer won 22 and 20, respectively.
The consistency of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic over two decades of Grand Slam tennis is mind-boggling. All three dealt with injuries over their careers so they did not even play in all of the Grand Slams during that time. Each won his first Grand Slam at an early age: Nadal was 19; Federer and Djokovic were 21.
Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Carlos Alcaraz were the only players able to snag multiple Grand Slam victories during the "Big 3's" dominance, three each for Murray and Wawrinka over the 21 years and two for Alcaraz in 2023.
Men's tennis is eager to crown the next generation of "Big 3" players with Carlos Alcaraz, 21, Jannik Sinner, 23 and Holger Rune, 21, prominent in those conversations. This begs the question of whether there will ever be another "Big 3" that dominates like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic did.
While anything is possible, the answer is likely no. Alcaraz and Sinner are off to a good start with four and two Grand Slams respectively, but injuries have hampered them already in their young careers. Rune has yet to win one.
There is also a deep field of tennis talent beyond these three players who can win Grand Slams. Daniil Medvedev is a Grand Slam champion who is not in the conversation of the potential next "Big 3" because he is 28.
Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are both two-time Grand Slam finalists. Americans Taylor Fritz, the 2024 U.S. Open finalist, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe could win Grand Slam titles one day.
All these players are in their mid to late twenties so their ages work against them compared to Alcaraz, Sinner and Rune.
The "Big 3" of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic was a phenomenon that we will not see the likes of in professional tennis ever again. For this reason, tennis fans must enjoy Nadal's final matches in the next month and whatever is left of Djokovic's career.
