Cam Newton is a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL MVP. Sure, he fell off a bit in his last few seasons, but there's no doubting that at his prime, Newton was a force to be reckoned with.
He's now transitioned to the media world and he has his own YouTube show which has generated some clips, but Newton is now taking a huge step up in that field.
According to a press release from ESPN, Newton will be joining the cast of "First Take"
The show is hosted by Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim, but Newton will be joining its cast of commentators.
“Cam Newton’s addition to "First Take" brings an electrifying presence, enhancing our roster of top-tier personalities,” ESPN executive David Roberts, said in the statement. “His dynamic charisma, combined with the high-profile debates alongside Stephen A. Smith, will create compelling, must-watch television for fans.”
Newton also commented on the news, saying, "I’ve always brought passion and energy into everything I do, and that won’t change at ESPN. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to share my perspective and go toe-to-toe with the best in the business. Fans can expect the same intensity I brought to the field, along with real talk, bold takes, and good fun.”
While there's a case to be made that debate shows like "First Take" have gone a long way toward ruining the integrity of sports journalism over the past decade or so, there's a reason ESPN still highly promote these shows.
It's because people still do watch them (even if they're tuning in to "hate watch") and in today's social media-obsessed culture, they do create viral clips.
With that in mind, Newton's charisma and charm will be a great fit for "First Take."
