Baker Mayfield fires back at Texas players talking trash after Oklahoma win

Following their win over Oklahoma this past Saturday, Texas players laid down a jersey of former Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield at the 50-yard line inside Cotton Bowl Stadium and stuck a Longhorns flag in the middle of it.

On Sunday, Mayfield, who is currently the starting quarterback of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, shared his thoughts about the actions of the Texas players after the school's victory over Oklahoma.

"[I'm] just a kid from Austin, Texas, that went to Oklahoma and won his last two Red River games, and being rent-free in their heads for almost a decade."

Mayfield has never been one to hide his true feelings from the public. Even dating back to his time with the Sooners, he developed a reputation for being a brash, in-your-face type of quarterback who Oklahoma fans loved to root for and opposing fan bases loved to hate.

But even as a native of Austin, Texas (where the University of Texas is located), Mayfield made it clear on Sunday that he's still always going to support the school that helped him become the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

As for the current Sooners, they delivered an underwhelming performance in a 34-3 loss to the Longhorns this past Saturday.

Oklahoma entered the second quarter of the matchup with a 3-0 lead, but then Texas put up 34 unanswered points and this season's version of the Red River Rivalry turned out to be a dud.

Perhaps the result of the contest shouldn't have been that big of a surprise as the Longhorns entered the game as the No. 1 team in the country while the Sooners were starting a true freshman at quarterback.

Against one of the best defenses in the nation, Oklahoma just couldn't get anything going on offense. In the loss, the Sooners averaged less than 2.5 yards per rush attempt, lost two fumbles, and were only 4-of-15 on third down.

Meanwhile, Texas rode the performance of its top defense and a strong rushing attack (177 yards on the ground) to the school's sixth win of the 2024 season. The victory improved the Longhorns' record to 6-0 this year. They are still the No. 1 team in both the latest Associated Press and AFCA Coaches polls

The 31-point loss knocked the Sooners out of both major polls for the first time this year so they'll have to get things back on track if they want to be one of the 12 teams to compete in this season's College Football Playoff.
