Despite beating the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday 34-13, Green Bay Packers kicker Brayden Narveson continued his woes, missing at least one kick for the fourth game this season.
Following a disappointing rookie season, the Packers released Anders Carlson during the preseason, hoping to find a more reliable option. After a strong showing in the preseason, they signed Narveson as their official kicker. However, through six games, he has struggled significantly, converting just 70.6% of his field goals (12-for-17) - the lowest percentage among starting kickers. From 40-49 yards, he is particularly troubling, going just 5-for-9.
A concerning trend has emerged for Narveson among his misses: consistently pushing his kicks wide right. While patience is vital for developing a young kicker, the pressing question is when the Packers will decide to move on. These similar issues they faced with Carlson last season ultimately hindered them in the playoffs, and history seems to be repeating itself.
With the NFC North shaping up to be the most competitive division in the league, the stakes have never been higher. Every missed kick could prove costly as the Packers aim for a playoff spot.
If Green Bay chooses to move on from Narveson, a potential replacement shone during Week 6 at Lambeau Field. Backup kicker Chad Ryland impressed for the Arizona Cardinals, going a perfect 2-for-2. Just two weeks prior, Ryland had a tryout with the Packers before signing with Arizona as a temporary fill-in for veteran Matt Prater, who is currently dealing with a knee injury. With Prater expected to be back soon, Ryland could soon be back on the market.
In his brief time with the Cardinals, Ryland has successfully converted five of six field goals, with his only miss being blocked. While not perfect, he has shown the reliability the Packers desperately need.
If Ryland becomes available again, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Green Bay make a move.
