'MNF' takeaways: Bills still rule the AFC East

The Bills took command of the AFC East with their 23-20 road win against the Jets on Monday night.

Here are five takeaways from the Week 6 finale.

Buffalo still rules the AFC East

The Bills already have a comfortable lead in the division they've won four consecutive times (2020-23). The Jets (2-4) had an opportunity to pull even in the AFC East with a win, but special teams miscues and penalties were too much for New York to overcome.

Buffalo's vulnerabilities were displayed in back-to-back losses in Weeks 4 and 5, but the gap between Buffalo and its division foes is so vast that they'll be negligible until the postseason arrives.

Nathaniel Hackett was the problem

Despite the loss, the Jets offense looked the best it has all season in passing game coordinator Todd Downing's first game as the play-caller, taking over for offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was sharp, completing one of the most ridiculous throws of the season on a perfect pass to wide receiver Allen Lazard in the fourth quarter.

Rodgers had a season-high 294 passing yards while going 23-of-35 with two touchdowns and an interception.

As dispiriting as the loss was, Rodgers' impressive outing should be enough for New York to believe its season is salvageable.

Jets RB Breece Hall bounces back

Hall's demise was greatly exaggerated. After struggling through the first five games of the season, Hall responded with his best performance of 2024 in the loss.

The third-year back had 169 total yards on 23 touches — 18 carries for 113 yards and five receptions for 56 yards.

Aaron Rodgers is the Hail Mary G.O.A.T.

Among all of the future Hall of Famer's accomplishments, Rodgers' Hail Mary success rate might be the most remarkable.

Rodgers found Lazard on a 52-yard hurl on the final play of the first half to cut Buffalo's lead to three, 20-17.

Rodgers previously completed Hail Mary attempts against the Lions and Cardinals during the 2015 season and the Giants in January 2017.

Per NFL Next Gen Stats, the most recent Hail Mary completion traveled 61.4 yards, the longest by a Jets quarterback since 2016.

Referees steal the show

In between lead referee Adrian Hill's Broadway audition, the Bills and Jets played a football game.

Referees made sure they were front and center during Monday's action, flagging the Bills and Jets a combined 22 times — 11 per side.

Two bogus roughing-the-passer penalties were the most egregious.

First, Bills defensive end A.J. Epenesa's sack on a 3rd-and-8 was negated by a personal foul penalty after officials deemed he landed with too much body weight on Rodgers. The Jets kicked the tying field goal later in the drive.

Jets defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw was called for a ticky-tack foul on Bills quarterback Josh Allen on Buffalo's go-ahead field goal drive.

Kinlaw wrapped Allen up on his shoulder pads and released him as the quarterback fell to the turf.

Allen sold the contact with an exaggerated flop, fooling the officials.

The AFC East showdown had enough intriguing storylines without the refs inserting themselves into the dialogue. The game's a much better product when officials are in a supporting role, not the lead.
