Less than a full week after New York Jets owner Woody Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh, the Jets fell to 2-4 on the season via Monday night's 23-20 home loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Despite that result and the overall state of the franchise, Johnson sounded confident while speaking with reporters at the owners meetings in Atlanta that the club will soon turn things around.
"We’re going to kick … you can fill the word in," Johnson said when asked by NFL Media's Judy Battista if the Jets' season was still "salvageable."
Johnson spoke shortly after it was reported that the Jets had come to terms on an agreement to acquire star wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders. Adams and Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers were teammates with the Green Bay Packers from 2014 through the 2021 campaign, and Adams earned first-team All-Pro nods in 2020 and 2021 when Rodgers won the regular season Most Valuable Player Award.
"You know, thinking is overrated," Johnson said about the trade he couldn't yet confirm since it hadn't been officially announced, as shared by Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. "You have to look forward. We have to look forward to the games we’re going to play each and every week and try to win all of them …you just have to go with your instinct and what’s the best thing to build a team."
According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Johnson added the Jets "want to bring a lot of change this week." The Jets reportedly are now willing to trade pass-rusher Haason Reddick amid his holdout that has gone on for months. Reddick hasn't played a single snap for the Jets since they acquired him from the Philadelphia Eagles this past spring.
"Based on what I saw yesterday," Johnson said while referencing New York's loss to Buffalo, "I think we’re starting in a new direction."
Ideally for the Jets, that direction will involve them earning a victory at the 4-2 Pittsburgh Steelers this coming Sunday.
As of Tuesday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Jets as 1.5-point favorites for that matchup.
