Packers' new safety duo could be the best in the NFL

Green Bay Packers rookie Evan Williams is making a significant impact early in his career, ranking as the highest-graded safety and top rookie in the NFL through the first six weeks of the 2024 season, per Pro Football Focus.

After logging just 24 defensive snaps in the first three weeks, Williams has emerged as a reliable playmaker under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, playing 126 snaps over the last three games. His standout performance in last week's win over the Arizona Cardinals further solidified his role on the Packers. In his 150 snaps through six weeks, he has allowed just five completions. His recent success raises the question of whether Hafley will give him the nod to be a full-time starter.

The Packers have been experimenting with their secondary overall, giving Keisean Nixon increased time on the outside, and rookie Javon Bullard more reps in the slot. Occasionally, Williams has been paired with new Packer Xavier McKinney on the field, creating the possibility for an intriguing safety duo.

Green Bay revamped their safety position in the offseason by not just drafting Williams, but also trading for McKinney. While McKinney recorded only three interceptions in his last 32 games with New York, he has already surpassed that total, racking up five in his first five games with Green Bay. With a PFF grade of 90.5, McKinney's performance this season closely follows Williams at 91.4, showcasing the potential of this formidable duo.

The partnership between Williams and McKinney has significantly bolstered the Packers defense, setting high expectations for the remainder of the season.
