Draymond Green setting the bar too high for Jonathan Kuminga

In his third year with the Golden State Warriors, Jonathan Kuminga took a giant developmental leap. Starting in 46 of 74 games, the third-year forward showcased why he's seen as an All-Star of the future and a vital part of the franchise's re-tooling process.

Kuminga must follow up those strong showings by proving that he's ready to cement himself in the starting lineup. His explosiveness, strength and scoring ability give the Warriors a different dimension on both sides.

During a recent "Dubs Talk" podcast appearance, veteran forward Draymond Green outlined his expectations for Kuminga.

“Anything less than an All-Star is a failure for him,” Green told Kerith Burke. "Score the basketball. He has to be a great scorer. He needs to be above 20 points per game, six [to] seven rebounds a night, and we need to win. Especially if you want to become a first-time All-Star. We know what he’s capable of and we believe in him.”

Kuminga's athleticism should allow him to become the Warriors version of Jaylen Brown, where he's tasked with being a score-first forward who pressures the rim at will. However, he must have a counter move, either in the mid-range or on the perimeter. That way, defenses can't sag off him to crowd the paint and limit his effectiveness.

Of course, the Warriors' floor spacing should give Kuminga plenty of opportunity to attack the lane in space. Secondary and tertiary scoring skills are essential if he wants to be an All-Star.

Nevertheless, Green's comments likely put too much pressure on Kuminga's shoulders. The Western Conference is stacked with elite top-end talent. He would need an elite season to enter the All-Star conversation.

Still, with the Warriors aiming to re-emerge as a championship contender, Kuminga must continue to improve. If having lofty goals placed in front of him can help expedite his development, Green will undoubtedly be happy with the results.
