Flames forward Sam Honzek out week-to-week with upper body injury
James Carey Lauder-USA TODAY Sports

The Calgary Flames are riding a four game winning streak to begin their 2024-25 season. But their depth is being tested early this season due to injuries. Already without forwards Yegor Sharangovich and Kevin Rooney, the club announced on Thursday morning that rookie forward Sam Honzek is out week-to-week with an upper body injury.

The 19-year-old Honzek attempted to throw a hit on Chicago defender Connor Murphy in the third period of Tuesday’s game. But Murphy saw him coming, and it turned out differently than Honzek probably intended.

Honzek finished his shift, but then didn’t play for the final 2:57 of the game. (Disclaimer: we don’t know for sure that was because of any injury reasons, as the Flames were nursing a one-goal lead.)

A first-round selection by the Flames in 2023, Honzek made the Flames roster to begin the regular season due to a simply fantastic training camp performance. He played a lot, but he played really well in a variety of situations and basically made it impossible for them to cut him. In four NHL games thus far, he has zero points and an even plus/minus rating, playing primarily with Nazem Kadri and Andrei Kuzmenko. He’s played well, but just haven’t hit the scoresheet yet despite quite a few strong scoring chances.

As of now, Honzek remains on the active roster, but his injury reduces the club to 12 healthy forwards (along with eight defencemen and two goaltenders). It may be reasonable to expect the Flames to call up an additional forward (and perhaps place Honzek on the injury reserve list) prior to Saturday’s game in Seattle.
