The Chicago Blackhawks needed to shake off their loss in Utah on Tuesday. What felt like the NHL setting the Hawks up for failure, Utah captured their first win in their new city. For the Hawks, two really good periods of hockey gave hope for the weekend stretch in Canada, starting in Winnipeg.
With Friday's tilt serving as the first leg of the back-to-back, Arvid Soderblom took over the net for the first time in 2024-25. With Laurent Brossoit on the sideline, Soderblom returns to his duties as the team's primary backup until Brossoit is fully healthy. While last season was brutal for Soderblom with a 5-22-2 record, .880 save percentage, and 3.92 GAA, Soderblom put together one of his best games as a Blackhawk on Friday night.
Stopping 33 of 35 shots, Soderblom looked poised to pick up a win in Winnipeg. Unfortunately, the young goalie was not able to capture the victory but it was certainly an impressive showing from the young Swede.
The Hawks fell 2-1 in overtime to the Winnipeg Jets. The Hawks took the lead first in Friday's contest with Ryan Donato ripping a filthy wrist shot past Connor Hellebuyck in the second period.
Despite the lead and really strong play from the Hawks, the Jets got the better of them. With the goalie pulled, the Jets won a critical face off in the Hawks' zone with Mark Scheifele potting a Nikolaj Ehlers rebound with just over a minute remaining. Then, in overtime, Scheifele worked a perfect give-and-go with Kyle Connor to score the winner for the Jets.
Soderblom was fantastic, the Hawks played really well, but the better team worked their way into a win late. Despite the overtime loss, this is certainly another building block for the Blackhawks as the cohesion comes together while their young goaltender shows promising development.
