Will Alexis Lafreniere sign a long-term extension with the Rangers?
Alexis Lafreniere Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

During NHL’s Prime on Sports broadcast, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli joined the program and hinted toward a long-term extension in the works for New York Rangers former No. 1 overall pick, Alexis Lafreniere.

Then on "Daily Faceoff Live," hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli talked more about if there is a long-term extension on the table for Lafreniere.

Tyler Yaremchuk: One guy who has been having a good start to the year and is in the extension talk is Alexis Lafreniere. If you remember, he wasn’t the No. 1 overall pick who just burst on the scene, it’s built up here over the years. Over the past three years, he’s had a big step forward and last year was the most significant with 57 points. What are you hearing on a long-term extension for Lafreniere?

Frank Seravalli: They are talking. I’ve been told they have been talking since last summer. They want to get something done and I can see why it’s important from a New York perspective. Look at last year and the 18 points he has continuously added each season. If he adds another 18 points to this total, he is a point-per-game guy. In the playoffs, he’s been a monster with eight goals in the last two playoffs. He’s just scratching the surface to that next level of what he can get into, I have seen it in person, going back to the World Juniors that he can find it in the moment.

Frank Seravalli: This is a significant moment for him in his career too, at 22 signing an eight-year deal might be the one crack at a big NHL contract. There is tons of optimism about getting a deal done. What type of world are we talking about? I shared on Amazon last night that it’s 8 years at $8 million, it could be a shorter-term deal. The tough part for the Rangers is managing the first two years of that deal due to other contracts they have on the cap. But given his growth, you won’t see him sign a deal with an AAV lower than $7 million.
