Philip Broberg is starting to look worth his cost with the Blues

Philip Broberg is making quite the first impression on the St Louis Blues.

The mobile defenseman has performed well early on this season, producing four points in his first four games with the Blues, while averaging a career-high 18:41 of ice-time a night. Broberg is playing mostly at five-on-five for St Louis, joining the team after signing a two-year, $9.16-million offer sheet this past summer, which of course, was not matched by the Edmonton Oilers, who drafted Broberg eighth overall in 2019.

So far, so good, for Broberg and the Blues, who are happy to see the young defenseman come out of the gates strong, after losing veteran Torey Krug to a season-ending lower-body injury ahead of opening night.

On today’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli discussed Broberg’s start and how he’s managed to change the narrative on how the Blues overpaid for his services.

Yaremchuk: I want to play a little game with you here, Frank. We know it’s peak overreaction season. I’m going to give you a take, one maybe you hear out at the bar, with a guy that’s had a few too many, and wants to say something bold. You’re going to give it a rating, 1-10. 10 being – that is insane and we will laugh at the end of the season, about this whole conversation. 1 – being it has a chance to happen.

Four points already on the year, in almost 19 minutes a night, Philip Broberg is already worth the $4.5-million cap hit, that so many people thought was an overpay at the time of the offer sheet.

Seravalli: One! I said, when the offer sheet was made, that he had a chance, in very short order, to become a $6.5-million defenseman in the NHL. It’s not necessarily the point production for me, there’s a ton to his game, the skating, the versatility to play left or right. I think his defensive-zone play is better than average. I just think for someone that’s really confident in himself and his game, which is sometimes 80% of the battle it seems with these guys, that he’s in really good shape to build on where he’s at.
