Cavs Signing Elijah Hughes

The deal is presumably an Exhibit 10 contract for training camp and will result in Hughes landing with the Cleveland Charge of the G League.

Hughes, 26, is 6-foot-5 and last played in the NBA during the 2021-22 season with both the Jazz and Trail Blazers. He originally was selected with the No. 39 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He was traded to the Blazers the next day.

Hughes has appeared in 54 games overall and carries averages of 2.9 points and 1.2 rebounds.

This move follows several others over the past couple of days, with the Cavs waiving shooting guard Zhaire Smith and point guard Jacob Gilyard, and signing undrafted rookie guard Darius Brown II.

Again, all are likely headed to the Charge. The same could likely be said about forward Pete Nance and guard Jules Bernard, both members of the Cavs’ camp roster.

Coach Kenny Atkinson suggested that the starters could see more minutes in the final two preseason games, both this week. They also visit Chicago on Friday, before opening the regular season next week at Toronto.

An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal. It doesn’t count toward a team’s cap unless the player makes the final roster. It also can be converted to a two-way deal before the season begins or mean guaranteed money if a player is waived and then stays on the G League club for at least 60 days.
