With how thin the Pittsburgh Steelers' receiving core has been all season, they have been waiting anxiously for Roman Wilson to be conditioned enough to play for them. He made his NFL debut in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders, but he only played five total snaps, meaning that Head Coach Mike Tomlin and his staff don't believe that he is ready to go just yet, but his time should be soon. However, a recent development may ruin those plans and force the rookie to miss more time.
After Thursday's practice leading up to Week 7, Wilson popped back up on the injury report. This time, it's a hamstring issue.
Just as rookie receiver Roman Wilson was starting to get past his ankle injury and earn the staff's trust, he pops up with a hami.

Wilson missed most of training camp and all of preseason due to a sprained ankle at the end of July. Due to the lack of practice and playing time, the Steelers have opted to keep Wilson as a healthy scratch for many weeks as they get him in football shape. After seeing his first game action, it seemed like he would start getting more snaps and even some looks in the passing game.
The Steelers are running out of trade options after Davante Adams was shipped off to the New York Jets. If they can't snag a true starting-caliber receiver before the deadline, Wilson will have to step up and compete to be the Steelers' WR2 behind George Pickens. It's getting very dire at that position, and it doesn't even matter which quarterback starts for the Steelers.
Van Jefferson was not expected to be a great starting receiver, but he has yet to be a true factor in the offense. He has just been a 1:1 replacement of Allen Robinson II, who was a "starting" receiver for the Steelers despite not putting up numbers to justify it. Even for Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith's many multi-tight end formations, the receiving room has underachieved greatly, even for their standards.
It's sad that the Steelers are at the point where losing a rookie with five whole snaps is considered devastating, but that's the state of the team at this point. Luckily, he was still a limited participant in practice, but who knows how quickly he recovers from that? Will he get a chance to get more snaps in Week 7, or will it be another month before he gets a helmet again?
