Bucs Open Up Practice Window For Wide Receiver

Wide receiver has been a position in which the Bucs are pretty banged up at the moment. Luckily, help could be on the way. The Bucs announced on Thursday that they have opened up the 21-day practice window for receiver Rakim Jarrett. That means Tampa Bay can activate him to the 53-man roster at any time within the next three weeks.

Jarrett was put on injured reserve back in August right as the Bucs were making their roster cuts. The injury has been undisclosed this whole time, but it was clearly bad enough to keep him out for the first six weeks of the season. Jarrett is going into his second year in the NFL. He had a limited amount of playing time last year and also went on injured reserve for a number weeks, so he  ultimately ended up with four catches for 60 yards in brief moments.

Throughout this year’s training camp Jarrett was solid. It made for good competition with a number of the receivers trying to get the last two or three spots. But Jarrett’s injury forced the Bucs’ hand. He practiced on Thursday and we shall see how ready he can get in the timeframe.

Bucs Have Been Hit Hard At Wide Receiver

The Bucs are going to need Jarrett as soon as possible given the developments to the rest of their room. Trey Palmer is in concussion protocol still at the moment while Jalen McMillan is just coming back from a hamstring injury. McMillan struggled in his return against the Saints, so he might need a little more time before his becomes a big contributor to the offense. Tampa Bay also has Cody Thompson on injured reserve, he was filling in for the other injured players in Week 5 on Thursday night football when he got sidelined.

Then there’s the situation the Bucs have with their star wide receiver Mike Evans for the time being. Evans was able to finish the game in Tampa Bay’s Week 6 win over the Saints, but he was not 100 percent by the end of it. He looked very hobbled throughout and made just two catches for 34 yards in the game. Evans was involved early, but once the injury flared up he was used more as a decoy and on second and third downs. Evans was not seen during Thursday’s practice, but he does have an extra day to prepare with the game being on Monday.

Luckily, the Bucs have been getting great production from Chris Godwin, who is tied with Evans and three others for the league lead with five touchdowns and is third in the NFL with 511 receiving yards so far. Sterling Shepard has also been a big help coming into be the third wide receiver and may have solidified his role over the last two weeks.

Depending on the stat us of Evans and Palmer, along with how much McMillan can progress. Jarrett’s availability will be a welcomed sight for Tampa Bay as they go through the toughest part of their schedule.
