Details Emerge About Potential Extension for Kings Star
USA Today Sports

The Sacramento Kings will be one of the league’s most interesting teams to watch during the 2024-25 season. After missing the playoffs last season, despite their historic season in 2022-23, the Kings had a busy offseason. Most notably, they acquired DeMar DeRozan from the Chicago Bulls. With DeRozan now in the mix, the Kings have the potential to be a top team in the West once again. This is especially true given the presence of Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox.

Since joining forces in Sacramento in 2022, Sabonis and Fox have been a fantastic duo. Additionally, after Sabonis signed a four-year, $186 million contract extension last year, he will be with the team for the long haul. As for Fox, he has two years remaining on his five-year, $163 million deal. However, despite being eligible for an extension this year, he will reportedly wait until next year to sign a new contract.

“Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox is bypassing a three-year, $165 million maximum extension this year as he and his representative, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, position the All-Star point guard for a larger deal in the 2025 offseason, sources told ESPN on Monday.

What De’Aaron Fox Means to Sacramento

Since drafting him with the fifth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, Fox has been a great player in Sacramento. In 2022-23, the Kentucky alum was selected to his first All-Star team. Additionally, he earned All-NBA Third Team honors, finished 11th in MVP voting, and won the Clutch Player of the Year award. Last season, he averaged a career-high 26.6 points per game and a league-leading 2 steals per game. Fox remains one of the most underrated players in the NBA, and he is crucial to the Kings’ success. Additionally, he and Sabonis make up one of the best duos in the league.

In a recent interview with Bleacher Report, Sabonis spoke about playing alongside Fox. Sabonis cited that neither of them has an ego, making it easier to play off each other.

“The reason me and Fox work is because there are no egos,” Sabonis told Bleacher Report. “We both just want to win, he lets me rock and I let him rock. DeMar is even more of that. We’re just going to play off each other. If they want to put the best defender on DeMar instead of Fox that night, great. And vice versa. We’re just going to play. We’re all here for the right reasons and at the points of our careers where we just want to win.”

Fox gets the best out of Sabonis and vice-versa. For the team to remain successful in the long run, Fox is an incredibly important part of their core.

The Last Word On De’Aaron Fox

Nothing is official yet regarding Fox’s future with the Kings. However, it seems likely that Fox will ultimately extend his contract to remain with the Kings, albeit one year later than he can. A lot can happen in the next year. For now, though, it is safe to assume that the 26-year-old will just sign his new deal next year.
