The Los Angeles Chargers Are Quietly The Best Defense In The NFL

Remember last year’s Los Angeles Chargers defense? They finished 28th in total defense and constantly blew leads for Justin Herbert and the offense. They also played unsound, and the fundamentals and gap integrity in the trenches were poor.

Well, that is certainly not the case for the 2024 Los Angeles Chargers defense. What defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and his staff have done is quietly make the Los Angeles Chargers defense the best in the entire NFL.

Los Angeles Chargers Best Defense In NFL

Through six weeks of the 2024 season, the Chargers are first in the NFL in the fewest points allowed with an astounding 13.2 points per game. They are followed by the Steelers, Vikings, Broncos, and Bears. Pretty good company.

They rank 6th in total yards allowing 289.2 yards per game.

Now, let’s be honest, overall this defense has not had to play many explosive offenses. They have wins over the Panthers (25th), Raiders (27th), and Broncos (29th). Their losses were against a bad Steelers (26th) offense, and a Chiefs (11th) offense that is not as potent as it once was, but is still led by Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes.

That being said, it is incredible how quickly Minter has been able to turn this defense around. And this is without star EDGE rusher Joey Bosa missing multiple games, and constant shuffling in the secondary.

You can just tell that this unit is so much more physical. They swarm to the football, and they don’t give up any cheap yards.

The season is still very young, but Jesse Minter and Co. deserve their flowers.
