When NC State and Clemson meet in a pivotal week 4 ACC clash, they will feature two teams eager to bounce back from early-season losses to SEC foes. The winner of this game can regain the momentum needed to navigate the ACC slate.
The Wolfpack have struggled on both sides of the ball. They’re 106th nationally in points scored per game with 21 and are 122nd in points allowed per game, at 36. Of course, most of that average comes from the dominating 51-10 loss at the hands of the Tennessee Volunteers. Driving the bus offensively will be the run game. In their season-opener, they established solid gains, whereas against the Volunteers, they only averaged 1.4 yards per carry. Against Clemson, they’ll face a stout and athletic defensive line that only surrenders 149 yards on the ground per game. One way to open the ground game is through a successful passing attack. While Clemson’s defense has been stout against the run, they struggle against passing offenses, surrendering a staggering 301 yards per game. Quarterback Grayson McCall must get off to a fast start to help NC State’s offense sustain drives early.
Meanwhile, Clemson rebounded from their season-opening loss to Georgia with a 66-20 victory over App State in Week 2. The Tigers feature one of the better passing attacks, with quarterback Cade Klubnik completing 78 percent of his passes and averaging 260 yards through the air per game. He should have some opportunities against a Wolfpack defense that’s 90th nationally in passing yards allowed per game. If Klubnik can get off to a hot start and help Clemson pull ahead early, NC State might not have the offensive firepower to keep pace.
ESPN favors Clemson in this game by 7.5 points. It’s easy to see why: the offense is dynamic, they’re coming off a good win and their quarterback built momentum in the process. NC State’s passing defense isn’t the best, but they’ve also struggled to stop opposing teams’ rushing attacks. Tennessee ran 249 yards against the Wolfpack defense, indicating NC State has a vulnerable front seven. Athletically, Clemson looks to be the much better of the two teams. Expect them to start fast, build a healthy lead and pull away in the second half.
