The Michigan State Spartans hope to snap their two-game losing streak when they visit Eugene to play the Oregon Ducks in a Friday night Big Ten showdown. The Spartans are in the most difficult part of their schedule, starting with a loss last week to the Ohio State Buckeyes. During this stretch, they also play Oregon, Iowa and Michigan. A win in Eugene would both be a surprise and momentum builder for a Michigan State team that held their own at times against the vaunted Ohio State defense last week.
The Spartans made big plays against one of the country’s best secondaries, so there’s no reason to think they can’t do the same when they face Oregon. However, consistency is where the team struggles the most. Quarterback Aidan Chiles has shown flashes of his potential, but he needs more consistent play from his offensive line, who gave up three sacks to the Buckeyes. If the Michigan State Spartans can start fast behind Chiles’ quick reads and ability to keep plays alive with his feet, Michigan State could make this a competitive contest.
Meanwhile, the Oregon Ducks won their first four games. While struggling at the beginning of the season at times, the Ducks are becoming the well-oiled machine many experts thought they would be. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel’s pose and consistency have helped Oregon have one of the nation’s better passing offenses. It also helps he has wide-receiving threats like Tez Johnshon to sling the rock and watch him make plays. Defensively, the Ducks hold opponents to fewer than 19 points per game, meaning Michigan State will have to force turnovers to exceed that total.
