LAS VEGAS – Caleb Plant had to get off the canvas to do it, but he scored a ninth-round TKO of a tough Trevor McCumby. The fight took place on the Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga undercard at T-Mobile Arena.

McCumby shocked Plant in the early rounds, displaying a surprising amount of power. In the fourth round, the Phoenix-based fighter floored Plant with a left hook to the shoulder. But everything changed from the fifth round on, as Plant bullied the inexperienced McCumby against the ropes with a plethora of power shots, including uppercuts, left and right hooks, and taunts along the way. Plant improved to 23-2 (14 KOs). McCumby (28-1, 21 KOs) lost for the first time in 14 years as a professional.

Both men fought at a measured pace in the opening round. In the closing stages of the frame, Plant connected with a body-head combination and a left hook upstairs. Plant shook his head at McCumby after getting clipped with a right hand at the beginning of round two. McCumby followed up with a left hook that knocked the former titlist back. With seconds left in the round, McCumby drove Plant into the ropes with a left hook and pushed him down to the canvas. The third round featured solid back-and-forth action. McCumby connected with a right hand that forced Plant to hold before twirling him around to the canvas. They fought on even terms from that point forward, but Plant bounced back late with a counter right hand and body shots that kept McCumby honest.

Plant, known for his jab and speed, used to control the first half of the fourth round. But with around 40 seconds left, McCumby sent Plant to the canvas with a left hook to the shoulder. The fifth round was a classic close-quarters battle , with Plant pinning McCumby against the ropes. Both fighters traded shots, but Plant got the better of McCumby with repeated left hooks to the body. Plant attempted to duplicate that in the sixth and did so easily, rocking McCumby with hard left hooks to the head throughout the round. He followed up with more hooks and taunted McCumby by shaking his hips and putting his hands by his ears before firing another series of shots. Plant battered McCumby for the remainder of the fight, forcing the referee to wave off the action just as the bell rung to end the 9th round.
