Artur Beterbiev (21-0, 20 KOs) might just have a new opponent around the corner.

The knockout maestro recently showcased an impressive performance against Dmitry Bivol (23-1, 12 KOs), a fight that gave him the first decision victory of his career and became the division’s first undisputed champion. While he relishes the spoils of his victory, it looks like there is a fighter who is eyeing a showdown against him. David Benavidez’s (29-0, 24 KOs) father, Jose Benavidez Sr., revealed that he is hopeful for a future fight between his son and Beterbiev.

Benavidez Sr. recently sat down for an interview with ProBox TV. ‘El Bandera Roja’ is currently set to face David Morrell, in conversation he opened up about his son’s upcoming fight and his potential matchup against Beterbiev. “David’s next fight is David Morrell. Everyone is super excited about it. We’ve been trying to make that fight for three years, but I believe David Morrell needed a little more experience to show the world that he deserves this fight,” he said.

Benavidez Sr. mentioned that the fight got made right away after David [Benavidez] called Morrell after his fight against Radivoje Kalajdzic. Moreover, he added that he was looking forward to his son fighting a strong fighter like Morrell and is anticipating it to be a tough fight.

This was when he shifted his focus to potentially facing Beterbiev. “Hopefully, we can get an opportunity to fight Beterbiev. He just won on Saturday. So, hopefully, we can get that, but right now, we’re focused on David Morrell. We got to look impressive in order to go to the next level,” he said.

Around The Curve: David Benavidez vs Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol Winner?

“I’m Still Going With…”

While there have been talks about the potential showdown, there have certainly been polarizing opinions about who’ll emerge as the victor and who better to share his thoughts than Lionell Thompson, who has sparred with both Benavidez and Beterbiev.

“I’m still going with Beterbiev. I think with Artur’s strength and power, he hits anybody, they’ll be like, ‘whoa, let me be more strategic,” he said while talking to FightHype. “David is really much bigger than Bivol. He’s really a cruiserweight that makes the weight, but he hasn’t been hit as hard. Artur has got retirement pop, so I’m still going with Artur.”
