If you ask any Houston Rockets fan about the team’s state as a team coming into the 2024-25 NBA season, many will likely respond with excited optimism. While the team still doesn’t have a player they can call a superstar, they have an exciting core of young players who have the potential to cause problems across the league in the next couple of years.
Fans would argue that Alperen Sengun is the player at the center of everything good happening for Houston. The Turkish big man was one of the best things for the Rockets last season. While there have been hiccups with his contract extension, many expect him to sign a long-term deal and stay in H-Town.
While there are still a couple of days before the season officially kicks off, one analyst laid out his expectations on how Sengun will lead Houston to the playoffs for the first time since the James Harden era.
The Dream Shake’s Nick Stevenson laid out his expectations out of the 22-year-old center who finished third in the 2023 Most Improved Player award.
He wrote that he believes the big man should have no reason to not continue his development as a focal point on the Rockets’ offense:
On the offensive end, there is no question Alperen Sengun has elite potential. Every season he has increased his rebounding averages as well. Last season Sengun had the 15th best defensive rating in the NBA with a 111.0 rating, a vast improvement over his 116.6 defensive rating the season prior. For reference, Giannis Antetokounmpo had a 111.8 defensive rating last season.
He also pointed out that while his defense could use some work, a bit of guidance from the team should help him improve his ability to safeguard the paint. He discussed the steps the Rockets took to ensure this:
This summer, the Rockets sent three player development staff members to Türkiye for seven weeks to help Sengun develop his game. Sengun looks stronger.
Sengun broke out for Houston last season, averaging 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.7 blocks while playing for 32.5 minutes a game. If he continues his growth this season, an All-Star nod is not far from his future.
