Dallas Stars reportedly shaping up as the favourite to land Calgary Flames Star defenseman

Rasmus Andersson may be on his way out of Calgary this season, and if that ultimately is the case, the Stars are lining up as a favourite.

Over the past 18 months, the Calgary Flames have moved out an immense amount of star power, with trade rumours persisting around several remaining names, including both Nazem Kadri and Rasmus Andersson. At the current point in time, the latter is shaping up to be one of the biggest trade chips in the entire NHL this season, and with two years left on his contract, it is believed that the Flames could get a haul in return for the veteran blue liner.

In recent weeks, speculation has picked up around the Dallas Stars, who have one of the weakest right side defense's in the entire NHL, with reporter John Dixon of Sportsnet predicting that they will land Andersson in his latest piece.

In the process, the team will likely have to give up one of their top prospects in Mavrik Borque, the centre that plays the position the Flames have the most need in, making this a perfect fit for both teams. In 2023/24, Andersson had a down year by his standards, tallying just 9 goals and 39 points in 78 games played, but remains one of the most well rounded blue liners in the NHL. As for Borque, he had a stellar year in the AHL with 26 goals and 77 points on the season, as he proved that he's NHL ready, but without a permanent spot for him in the league just yet, moving him for a big return makes sense for the Stars.

Last year, the two sides came together on a deal that sent Chris Tanev to Dallas, so the relationship is clearly there, and with both teams having major needs, this is a trade that just makes too much sense to not be explored.
