New York Rangers ridiculed for recent banner hung in Madison Square Garden

The New York Rangers won the President's Trophy a year ago, but their interesting choice of banner to celebrate it has now drawn plenty of ridicule.

Last season was another great year for the New York Rangers, and although the team fell short of the Stanley Cup Finals, they did have some success by winning the President's Trophy, given out to the team each year with the best record in the regular season. Most teams celebrate this with a banner that reads 'President's Trophy winners', but at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers have opted for a different title on their latest banner.

Ahead of their home opener, New York unveiled both a Metropolitan Division Champions banner and a 'Regular Season Champions' banner, the latter of which is drawing plenty of criticism. On paper, that's exactly what the President's Trophy represents, but as many fans pointed out on social media, the idea of putting the word 'Champions' on their banner when they fell short is the major issue with this situation.

Not only that, but it caught the attention of the former players behind the Spittin' Chiclets podcast, who took their turns to ridicule the Rangers and the decision behind this banner too.

This isn't the first time that a team has hung this banner up, as carefully pointed out by a fan on social media, but to dedicate an entire banner to winning the President's Trophy without simply titling it that is a very strange decision from GM Chris Drury and the Rangers.

Ultimately, it's not a great look for New York, who have now hit 30 years since their last Stanley Cup victory, and with the team looking to break that drought this season, it's safe to say that they could have made a much better decision with their latest banner.
