Bands come and go, but these 20 had particularly shocking breakups.
No band splitting up was more shocking than The Beatles because no other band has influenced so many people profoundly. When Paul McCartney announced in 1970 that he was releasing music as a solo act, the world was devastated, and he was blamed for the breakup. McCartney insists that it was John Lennon’s fault, though.
Before social media, the best way for bands to communicate directly with fans was at a concert. Several, including The Replacements, announced they would be splitting up while on stage. Fans were surprised by the message, but in retrospect, the band was too chaotic to last.
Aerosmith is rock and roll, and they shocked everyone in 1979 when they broke up. The breakup proved to be a brief hiatus in the scheme of things, and by 1984, they were together again. The band had a few more hiatuses throughout their run, and in 2023, they announced they’d be going on a farewell tour.
The breakup of One Direction was slow and painful. It began in 2015 with the first loss of a member, Zayn Malik. The remaining four recorded another album sans Malik, but shortly after, they announced they’d be going on hiatus. Months later, it was reported that the band had officially disbanded, leaving Directioners everywhere heartbroken.
NSYNC was on top of the boy band world when they announced in 2002 that they would be taking a hiatus. Fans were upset, but Justin Timberlake assured fans it was the best decision. It was a good move for Timberlake. He went on to have incredible success as a solo artist. The rest of the band had mixed feelings.
The Spice Girls broke up in the early 2000s for multiple reasons and the split shocked and saddened fans. But the Spice Girls are girls’ girls, and they’ve reunited for the fans and each other multiple times since officially disbanding.
It’s no longer surprising when Rage Against the Machine breaks up, but the band’s first split did shock fans. In 2000, the group’s lead singer, Zack de la Rocha, announced that he would leave due to creative differences. They’ve gotten back together and broken up again multiple times since.
Fifth Harmony’s breakup was full of drama and rumors. The beginning of the end started when Camila Cabello left in 2016 to pursue a solo career. About two years later, after doing their best to carry on without Cabello, the rest of the band shocked fans by calling it quits indefinitely.
Of all the bands you’d assume would stay together forever, it’d be one made of brothers. But The Everly Brothers proved that even siblings are capable of going their separate ways. In 1973, the band surprised everyone by announcing they’d be working together no more, and they punctuated it with an unforgettable (in a bad way) performance at Knott’s Berry Farm.
Anyone who was a fan of Poison in their heyday can admit that the band was a bit of a mess. The members were fighting individual demons, and those managed to seep into what they were trying to do on stage. The original band broke up at the 1991 MTV VMAs after CC DeVille and Bret Michaels got into a fight backstage.
The Sex Pistols were the pride of English punk rock, making it big all around the world. But after a tough tour throughout the United States, the group announced on stage in San Francisco in 1978 that they would be disbanding, sending shockwaves through the disappointed audience.
Everyone thought The Smashing Pumpkins was destined to make music history, and they were right, just not in the expected way. After a huge start, the band started experiencing poor sales and internal conflict, and one member of the group struggled with drug addiction. The band eventually imploded, shocking fans with their breakup.
Everyone is replaceable. Black Sabbath became known across the world of rock and roll with its original lineup, which included Ozzy Osbourne. But the rest of the band felt Osbourne’s struggles with addiction were causing too much strife among the group, and they kicked him out in the mid-'70s, surprising everyone.
Wham! — the pop duo made of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley — became known for hits like “Careless Whisper” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” but they didn’t stand the test of time. Duos can be challenging to manage, and creative differences tore Wham! apart, leading to their surprising 1986 end.
The Eagles were crazy popular in the mid-to-late '70s, but the world didn't see what was going on backstage: creative struggles and substance abuse. While performing at a fundraiser for a politician, the band broke out in an on-stage fight, effectively ending the group.
It’s kind of amazing that bands function enough to make music in the first place. Soundgarden is a classic example of a band wanting to head in too creatively different places to make things last. Still, the world was surprised when they announced they were splitting after 12 years together.
Some say The Police were never meant to remain a cohesive unit. Sting famously felt that bands were best formed by those in their youth, and eventually, things didn't jive between him and his bandmates. Lots of fans were upset by this band's breakup.
Bands can work if they're made of just siblings or just people who aren't related, but a mix of siblings and people who aren't related can get dicey. Such was the case with Oasis, a band that broke hearts when they split. The Gallagher brothers reportedly still aren't on great terms.
Lineup changes have plagued many bands over the years. For The Clash, it was too much to handle. The litany of lineup changes completely changed the band's makeup, and between that and internal issues, it proved too much to handle.
Pixies was super influential in their time, but they weren't strong enough to last through anything. The band suffered from many issues, and in 1993, lead singer Black Francis announced via the radio that the band was over. The other Pixie members found out about the disbandment with the rest of the world, with one even learning the news via fax.
