21 music videos with unforgettable dance moments

Dance crazes, trends, and routines have always managed to make their way around the world. Yes, even before the internet and TikTok. A young person may wonder how. Well, music videos. They used to play on MTV around the clock but are now part of the endless sea of content on YouTube. Nevertheless, the music video and the dances found in them have been influencing how people move, groove, and prove their worth on the dance floor for years — and these are the most memorable.

Beyoncé, “Single Ladies”

Beyoncé went very simple for the “Single Ladies” video. Black and white with her and a few dancers in basic leotards. That’s because she knew that the choreography was going to be what sold that video, and she was 100% correct about that. Hearing that, “Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, o-ohh,” will cause one to bust it out.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was just getting started in politics on Veep, the Twilight saga was ending, and everyone and their mother was trying their best to do the gallop-inspired move that came along with PSY’s “Gangnam Style.”

OK Go, “Here It Goes Again”

OK Go is not the type of band with which dance is associated. They are a rock band most likely heard in Hollister in the early ‘00s, but they burst out of retail in 2007 when the video for “Here It Goes Again” was released because it featured the four members doing a unique routine that utilized treadmills.

Britney Spears, “Oops!…I Did It Again”

This list could have very well been 90% Britney Spears because if there is one thing Britney does above and beyond her musical peers, it’s dance. Whether it’s shimmying in a schoolgirl uniform, sweetly moving on a pier, or twirling around her living room. However, it’s what she busted out for “Oops!…I Did It Again” that sits atop her wildly popular video moments.

NSYNC, “Bye Bye Bye”

“Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC was already destined to be one of the most notable songs from its time. Catchy, repetitive pop, with Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez absolutely delivering on the vocals? Yes, and yes! They topped it off with the aggressive fist pumps and air humps. Marvelous.

Aaliyah, “Are You That Somebody”

There is no reason Aaliyah had to go that hard for a song and dance alongside the Eddie Murphy comedy, Dr. Dolittle, but she did just that.

Bruce Springsteen, “Dancing In The Dark”

Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark” features the Jersey boy and Courteney Cox (long before Friends stardom) doing a dance that would later inspire Alfonso Ribeiro’s infamous Carlton Dance on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Madonna, “Vogue”

Voguing spawned from the Ballroom scene, which Madonna spent a lot of time in when she moved from Michigan to New York City to pursue her musical dreams. Years after landing in the Big Apple, she paid homage to and introduced a broader audience to the dance style in her video for "Vogue."

What is better than one Jackson dancing? Two Jacksons dancing up an absolute interstellar dance storm.

Bless Juvenile and “Back That Azz Up” for making every teacher overly stressed in the 2000s when it came time to chaperone the middle school dances.

Ironically enough, it’s not “Just Dance” but rather the choreo from “Bad Romance” that made this list. However, with Gaga, there is no wrong choice.

One thing a boy band must do to solidify themselves in the history books is have a signature dance move, and New Kids On The Block did that with their Bostonian take on a hoedown throwdown jive in the video for “You Got It (The Right Stuff).”

“Crank That (Soulja Boy)” might have lost the Grammy for Best Rap Song to Kanye West and T-Pain’s “Good Life,” but only one of those two songs will live in the Popular Dance Move Hall of Fame.

Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice” didn’t really inspire many to emulate the video, but it’s hard to forget Christopher Walken moving in it.

George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley truly represented the carefree ways of ‘80s dance moves in the clip for “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” So much so that it feels like everyone since then dances just like they did in the video whenever they are asked to dance it’s 1989.

There is no talking about memorable dance moves without the mathematical ways of Ciara and Missy Elliott’s “1, 2 Step.”

Yeah, Deadpool didn’t do their routine in the biggest R-rated movie ever in theaters, but that doesn’t mean the choreo from the ballroom in “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” isn’t still ingrained into the minds of millions.

Michael Jackson has a lot of dancing instances out there, but “Thriller” is like the cherry on top of them all.

Los Del Rio, “Macarena”

The ‘90s would not have been the same without the ridiculousness of “Macarena.” People did this dance everywhere, from sporting events to schoolyards. Even today, one can still find people performing this at a random wedding every weekend.
